Dyeing Wool in a Environmentally Friendly Way

The biggest dyeing factory in the Kathmandu valley focuses on environmentally friendly production with the help of Label STEP. A sewage treatment system reduces consumption by half, minimises pollution of the remaining sewage and makes the company the national pioneer.

Spectrum Dye is the name of the biggest wool dyeing and carpet washing factory of Nepal. In the past, the pollution of water and air by the working processes was substantial since the once used water was not reused any more, but ran off together with the partly toxic chemicals. Label STEP cooperated with the owner of Spectrum Dye for the installation of a sewage treatment system which makes the sewage usable again.

Spectrum Dye leading the way

Within the scope of a pilot project Label STEP supported the company by taking over a part of the acquisition costs for the system. Spectrum Dye itself financed the rest and agreed to impart his know-how with other entrepreneurs. The sewage treatment system has been in use since 2000 and the environmental impact could be reduced efficiently: The water volume spent daily could be reduced by recycling about half of it and up to 95% of chemicals were filtered from the water. The exemplary function of Spectrum Dye is especially important. The company was invited to workshops and seminars to report about its experiences with sewage treatment. Unfortunately, Spectrum Dye had to stop the operation of the system temporarily because of cost concerns and a lack of demand.

Therefore, Label STEP appeals to the Nepalese producers and their customers not to neglect ecological aspects concerning the dyeing of wool and the final washing of carpets and to consider ecologically friendly procedures, like that of Spectrum Dye.

Only if the sewage from the dyeing factory does not find its way into the environment...
the joy about the colorful wool is unclouded.
