Fair wages to secure livelihood

Label STEP calculates in all carpet production regions the wage a weaver needs to secure his livelihood and that of his family. The calculation of this wage, the so called “Living Wage”, is based on the codex of the international organisation Ethical Trade Initiative (ETI). It takes into consideration expenses for food, health, housing, clothes, education and savings. The Living Wage is calculated regularly based on current market prices.

Where customary salaries do not meet the Living Wage, the wage of the weavers must be adjusted step by step. To achieve the goal of the Living Wage, Label STEP cooperates with carpet producers, local authorities and importers.

Besides the payment of fair wages Label STEP requires that the workers are provided transparent and easy to understand information about wages and working conditions in their local language.
