Jan Kath
You can be cool while still keeping your feet warm! With his modern designs, Jan Kath (37) is creating a completely new perspective on carpets. Guided by a bold approach to his work, Kath, who is from Bochum, combines classical elements of oriental carpets with contemporary, minimalist design. He consciously breaks with customary ways of seeing and throws strict rules of composition overboard. While an entire generation once rolled up their grandmothers’ Persian rugs and exiled them from their living rooms, Kath’s designs are now bringing them “back to the carpet.”

BORO
The inspiration for the Boro design is an ancient patchwork art from Japan. There, long strips of worn materials are sewn together to form exclusive wall hangings. Jan Kath has found a new interpretation for this idea in his designs.

ORIGINS
CONCEPT
The carpets in the Concept Collection fulfill the desire for simplicity and directness. Because design is abandoned here, the main focus shifts to large surfaces, color, structure, and quality. “This is a grand entrance for Tibetan highland wool,” says Jan Kath. “Although it is essentially a monochrome surface, a sense of vitality is created by the materials used. Depth and structure emerge, thus making it possible for a single-color carpet to have the presence of a sculpture in the room.”
GAMBA UND SPICE
Plants and natural colors have a very important role in the Gamba and Spice Collection. In addition to hand-combed and hand-spun Tibetan highland wool, these carpets are composed of stingingnettle and hemp fibers, which lend the designs an unusual vitality and depth.
LE MAROC BLANC
These carpets make you want to lie down and sleep on them. The naturally white, fluffy Berber rugs have a tradition in Morocco that is centuries old. At their small, portable weaving chairs, the nomad women wove carpets that were narrow but often quite long. These pieces filled the nomads’ tents. The voluminous and rustic carpets served to insulate the floor from cold, and to make the space livable.
MAURO
Stinging-nettle fibers are the basic material of the Mauro Collection. Wool and silk are used solely to create individual accents. Due to the choice of materials, the carpets express an untouched charm, as though left to nature.
SLICED
Jewelry for floors: Emerald, hematite, quartz and agate. In the new collection “Sliced,” the design template is derived from nature. Jan Kath’s carpets reproduce cross-sections of elegant precious and semi-precious stones.
RADI DELUXE
Anything is permitted, as long as it’s fun! In “Radi Deluxe,” Jan Kath has freely combined his two most successful collections...
